When to convert PNG to HEIC
PNG is lossless, which makes files large — especially for photos and high-resolution screenshots. Converting to HEIC trades a small amount of precision for a much smaller file. That's useful for archiving screenshots on an iPhone, or storing photo exports compactly in an Apple library.
For images that must stay pixel-perfect — logos, UI designs, diagrams with fine text — keep the PNG, or use the Maximum quality setting.
Transparency
PNG files with transparent backgrounds keep their transparency: the alpha channel is encoded as a HEIF auxiliary image, which Apple's Photos and Preview display correctly.

Is PNG to HEIC lossless?
No. HEIC uses lossy HEVC compression. At High or Maximum quality the difference is minimal, but PNG remains the choice for pixel-perfect graphics.
Are my files stored?
No. They are processed in memory and deleted immediately after the HEIC file is returned.
Can I convert screenshots to HEIC?
Yes. Screenshots are usually PNG files and convert well, often to a fraction of the size.
