What Is a HEIC File? A Clear Guide to Apple's Photo Format

They look like ordinary photos on the iPhone, but elsewhere they sometimes refuse to open. This guide explains what HEIC is, why it exists and what you can do with it.
HEIC in one sentence
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It's a variant of the HEIF image format (High Efficiency Image File Format) in which pictures are compressed with HEVC, the same codec used for H.265 video. Apple made it the default photo format on iPhone and iPad with iOS 11 in 2017.
Why Apple uses HEIC
The main reason is efficiency. HEVC compression is considerably more advanced than the JPEG algorithm from the early 1990s. For photos of similar visual quality, a HEIC file is often around half the size of a JPG. On a phone that stores thousands of pictures, that saves a lot of space — and makes backups and iCloud syncing faster.
HEIC also supports features that JPG simply doesn't have:
- Higher bit depth — HEIF can store more than 8 bits per colour channel, which helps with smooth gradients and HDR photos.
- Transparency — an alpha channel for cut-out subjects and stickers.
- Multiple images in one file — bursts, image sequences, thumbnails and depth maps for Portrait mode.
- Non-destructive edits — rotation and cropping can be stored as instructions instead of re-encoding pixels.
The catch: compatibility
JPG has been universal for decades. HEIC is much younger, and support outside Apple's ecosystem is uneven:
