HEIC vs HEIF: What's the Difference?

HEIC and HEIF are often used interchangeably, but they aren't quite the same. Here's the difference between the container standard and Apple's photo format — in plain language.

You'll see both names in settings menus and file extensions — iPhone's camera setting even calls it “High Efficiency” and mentions HEIF/HEVC. Are HEIC and HEIF different formats? Short answer: HEIF is the family, HEIC is the most common member.

HEIF: the container

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is an MPEG standard that describes how to store images, image sequences, thumbnails and metadata in a file. It doesn't prescribe a single compression method. Think of it like a box with standard compartments. Read more about HEIF.

HEIC: HEIF with HEVC inside

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) specifically means a HEIF file whose images are compressed with HEVC (H.265). That's what iPhones save. Inside the file, a “brand” code such as heic or heix tells software which codec profile is used.

So what about file extensions?

`.hif`	HEVC-coded HEIF from cameras (Canon, Sony, Fujifilm…)

Software that reads HEIC normally reads .heif and .hif files too, because the codec is the same. AVIF needs an AV1 decoder, which is a different thing.

Practical differences for you

For everyday use, there's no meaningful difference between a .heic and a .heif file from a phone:

Both open on Apple devices.
Both need HEIF/HEVC support on Windows.
Both can be converted the same way — use the HEIC converter or the HEIF converter, which handle all these extensions.

Camera .hif files are often 10-bit and may be shot in HDR modes. Converting them to 8-bit JPG works, but HDR highlights can't be fully preserved.
